Its entirely possible to take the trains here from Tokyo. No need to rent a car.
Take a day trip and visit Nikko's Shrines and Temples. It is a world heritage site and incredibly beautiful tucked away in the Japanese forests.
The proverb "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" originates from here.
If time permits, I would also recommend spending the night in a ryokan.
